"This is a critical time for our nation. President Trump and his administration face wide-ranging allegations of misconduct that strike at the heart of our constitutional order. Congress has a constitutional duty to serve as a check and balance against any such excesses. We have an obligation to investigate evidence of abuses of executive power, public corruption, and acts of obstruction designed both to undermine our laws and the credibility of the agencies that enforce those laws. We are also responsible for passing laws to address, and prevent the recurrence, of any such misconduct"No specific claims of misconduct, abuses of executive power, public corruption or acts of obstruction have been made by the Judiciary Committee in what amounts to a desperate bid to uncover anything, anywhere, from anyone that can besmirch or possibly incriminate Trump. While Mueller was bound by grand jury secrecy rules and Department of Justice policies to prevent public disclosure concerning specific allegations during his investigation--the Judiciary Committee has chosen to act out its investigation in full gaze of the media and the public. Naturally the media has already run with the list of those caught up in the Judiciary Committee's net--ensuring they remain hounded targets of continuing interest. The letters of most of those targeted were sent to lawyers and not to them personally. Good publicity for the lawyers and an ominous portent of things to come. Those targeted face enormous personal stress and heavy legal costs as they are relentlessly pursued by a Committee with bottomless pockets and an unlimited army of assistants to trawl through piles of documents. Those letters should be sent back to the Judiciary Committee unopened. The New York Times published an article before the letters had probably even reached their destination--distributing 52 of the recipients under these provocative headings:
