Toronto – Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center’s 25,000 Canadian member families thank Prime Minister Stephen Harper for activating the Special Economic Measures Act against Iran.
In a statement released today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said, “the government of Canada is implementing new regulations aimed at restricting Iran’s nuclear program and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction”. The sanctions will ban Canadian involvement in Iran’s oil and gas sector and the export of goods that could contribute to nuclear proliferation. “They also prohibit Iranian financial institutions from establishing a presence in Canada and vice versa”, said the Prime Minister. “As we have seen on many occasions, our Prime Minister is a trail blazer for doing what is right and necessary. We hope these additional measures pave the way for other nations to immediately follow, as they did when Canada was the first to withdraw from Durban II”, said Avi Benlolo, FSWC President and CEO.
