German Coffee Cake

This little gem comes from Darmstadt, Germany……Just outside of Frankfurt

3 cups all-purpose flour 4 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt ¼ tsp. nutmeg ¼ tsp. cinnamon ¾ cup sugar ¼ cup shortening 1 cup milk 2 eggs Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, spices, and sugar. Work the dry ingredients into the shortening. Add eggs and milk, stirring till smooth. Pour into a greased 9 X 12 inch baking pan.

Topping

¼ cup shortening 1 cup brown sugar 1/8 tsp. salt ¼ cup all-purpose flour ½ tsp. cinnamon 1 cup coarsely chopped black walnuts With a fork, blend all but the walnuts, and spread evenly on top of batter in pan.
