A song that moved me to tears of pride 30 years ago moves me to tears of sorry now
I mourn for my country
Watching new Americans take the oath of citizenship this morning was an emotional experience.
The ceremony ended with Lee Greenwood singing his historic "God Bless the USA". My heart was troubled as I watched.
The song starts, "If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd work for all my life. And I had had to start again, with just my children and my wife. I'd thank my lucky stars, to be livin' here today, 'cuz the flag still stands for freedom and they can't take that away----"
I fear we will lose the things we have worked for and I fear the tools to rebuild will be missing.
We have allowed so much to slip away. And while our flag still stands for freedom, they can take that away and they will if we don't wake up. It is happening at an alarming rate.
So a song that moved me to tears of pride 30 years ago moves me to tears of sorry now. I mourn for my country.
