I'll bet most people have no idea how the internet works in regard to the millions of users around the world. In simple terms, who keeps track of internet addresses and issues new ones? Good old American initiative caused a California Computer Science researcher with the Southern California Information Science Institute, Jon Postel, to create the Internet Corporation for Assignment of Names and Numbers (Icann). There had been forerunners of Icann, all involved Postel. Postel's work at the Institute was funded by the US Department of Defense.
Icann was formed as a not-for-profit corp. that was under contract to the US Department of Commerce but managed by a globally represented board of directors. Icann is funded by fees and by the contract with DOC.
In March of this year, the DOC and Icann signed an agreement that ends DOC contracts and control.
So, here we are. US DOC control ends. And there is a void. Somebody has to be in charge. That it why it is expected that Icann will fall under United Nations control.
This is a business that grew from a new technology, that was built by American ingenuity and American dollars, and was established under control of our government and we are giving it away?
One has to wonder how security will be maintained, costs regulated and the system funded. There seems to have been no apparent need for the United States to end its control.
There are no examples of the United Nations doing a better job than the United States on anything. There are ample examples of the UN messing things up. With the United Nations in charge, we will still bear the major expenses but without the control. Are we crazy?
