A heated new debate about Beijing’s influence has raised calls in Australia for greater vigilance toward Chinese money, as countries around the world grapple with a rising appetite in China for overseas infrastructure and sensitive technology. Australia has stood at the forefront of Western countries in building economic links with China. In the decade leading to 2015, only the United States received more Chinese investment; Australia’s tally nearly doubled that of Canada over that period.
