I’ve contacted by email both the Leader of Bloc Quebecois, Yves-Francois and the Premier of Quebec (Posted as Prime Minister of Quebec on his web site) Legault about their resistance to Pipeline East.
They’ve stubbornly put their interests in Quebec only, and pay little attention to the ROC (Rest of Canada). The fatal statement by Premier Legault was ‘lack of an appetite’ for Pipeline East, supported by Liberal Prime Minister Trudeau. Yet we know, full well, they’re importing fuel from such places such as Saudi etc. where little environmental standards are followed. They’re ok with tankers crossing a vast ocean on ‘fossil fuel’ and unloading it in their ports along the St. Lawrence River.
My concern is, they’re expecting equalization payments from Canada (the country they care less about) while deeming themselves as independent. In light of this, my question to both of them was “The province of Quebec is only as strong as the ROC – if Canada is weak and our economy down, it’s also true of Quebec.”
While western Canada AND the east coast provinces want to develop our oil/gas resources to create jobs, higher standards of living AND security, they’re again turning their backs. The key word is ‘security’ – that we can defend ourselves and/or contribute to our allies in an equal and meaningful way. Right now, Canada is unable to a) defend ourselves and b) help other countries being threatened with any kind of substantial aid.
Thanks to our strong ally, USA, governments for decades, have foolishly neglected our security and underdeveloped our resources that are critical to our independence. Now, caught in a no-win situation, Quebec leaders still aren’t able to pull WITH Canada and get Pipeline East into reality. Their past decision to block that line has left Canada vulnerable to all kinds of enemy issues. Their refusal to our request makes me wonder if WE should not only not purchase American products – maybe we should also refuse to purchase Made in Quebec products.
My message to Quebec and their leaders is: IF Canada goes down, so does Quebec. If USA DOES absorb us (heaven forbid) they’ll need to speak American, that would be English, AND they’ll forever be known as the province that did the least to protect the Country of Canada, in its hour of need, of which they are a part, like it or not.
