Bartlesville, Okla. September 9, 2011. This past August a mid-west liberal arts college announced that it would no longer permit its students or faculty to sing the national anthem because it is “too violent.”
At the same time, there is a growing chorus of academic elites in universities across our nation and elected officials in our Nation’s capital, who seem to believe that saying the Pledge of Allegiance is anathema to our national character and that our country’s official motto: “In God we Trust” needs to be disavowed and changed.
At Oklahoma Wesleyan University we believe differently.
This weekend, as we reflect on the ten year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States of America, OKWU will honor the brave men and women who, throughout our county’s history, have sacrificed their lives to give us the freedoms we all presently enjoy and cherish: The freedom to say a pledge; the freedom to declare our trust in God; Yes – even the freedom to disagree with those in power and dissent with those at the pulpit.
This Saturday Sept. 10, 2011 we will exercise our freedoms, not by prohibiting the Star Spangled Banner but by celebrating it!
Please come to the OKWU soccer fields at 5:45 p.m. and join our students, our faculty and our staff as we come together in community to say the Pledge of Allegiance and sing our national anthem.
The OKWU Eagles men’s soccer game starts at 5:00 pm. with the ceremony to take place at approximately 5:45 p.m. Arrive early for free Home of the Brave t-shirts for first arrivals. Dinner is available for purchase at the field. The ceremony will be video-taped to be used for publications.
We want hundreds of local community members to join us in showing support to our veterans and others who have given their lives for the freedoms we all enjoy.
