The Sandy Hook school shooting was a tragedy of unbelievable magnitude. It is also a tragedy that would not have been prevented by any of the current proposals because the lady who bought the guns was a law abiding, record free individual who would qualify for gun ownership after all the new rules are passed.
Was she naive or stupid? It would seem so because the weapons should not have been within her son's reach. Was she helplessly caught in a hell on earth with a child desperately needing help where no help was available or known to her? It is easy to imagine that was so. In hindsight were there plenty of opportunities for the mother, educators, other family members and professionals to sound an alarm? That is generally the case.
What troubles me about the 23 Executive orders and the request for Congressional action is that none of these would have or will stop troubled, angry, disconnected people from committing atrocities and we are only kidding ourselves if we believe we can make enough laws to protect society.
Our problems are much deeper than any laws can fix. We need intact families, we need God back in our country, we need to practice personal responsibility, and we need to care about one another. The solution is inside of each of us and all the posturing by the President won't solve a thing.
