Punishing Walmart
The Washington, DC law that mandates higher minimum wage for big box employees is the beginning of something much worse.
What could possibly be the reason? Do those employees work harder than others with similar jobs in smaller companies? Are the working conditions more difficult?
It seems that the move is punitive. It seems that Walmart is the target. And it appears that they know it. Walmart is not unionized. The minimum wage for stores like Walmart is one way to
punish them for failure to fold to the pressure of the unions.
For those who think it is OK to target big box stores with special wage requirements, just ask yourself, where does this stop? Higher minimum wage causes higher cost of goods and services.
Or, as in this case, the retailer simply leaves the area.
A bigger concern it-who is next? Whether or not you like Walmart (and other big box stores) this is discriminatory. This is a wrong.
