It's a noble mission that the Canadian frigate HMCS Toronto was on as the world wakened to Monday morning today. HMCS Toronto was conducting a search and rescue mission looking for nine missing soldiers, said to be the victims of a "catastrophic volcanic eruption".
The volcano erupted on the island of Jazirt Atta-Ir in the legendary Red Sea, about 70 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen, Sunday night. Al-Arabiyan Television quoted eyewitnesses as saying the island was engulfed in flames and had disappeared. "At least 49 soldiers were evacuated from the island, television newsmen stated. Yemeni officials were not available to confirm the report at press time. Yemeni has maintained a military base on the island since its 1996 conflict with Eritrea over the nearby island of Hanish and Jabal Zuqar. HMCS Toronto had been within the area with the NATO fleet, headed for the Suez Canal when it spotted the catastrophic eruption and responded to a call for help from the Yemen government. There were no reports at this time whether any of the volcano victims were found at sea. As Canada Free Press (CFP) reader Mark Smyth of Toronto points out, "There have been more major earthquakes in the past week than at any other recent time." "A major earthquake is one with a magnitude of 6.0 or bigger. "This past Sunday, September 30, there were three major earthquakes and on September 28 there were five major earthquakes. Biblical students see the increase in earthquakes as a sign of the end of an age and even the end of the world. The USGS Reporting Website chronicles the number of earthquakes worldwide:

Latest Earthquakes M5.0+ in the World - Past 7 days

Latest Earthquakes Magnitude 5.0 and Greater in the World - Last 7 days

Versión en Español

Magnitude 5 and greater earthquakes located by the USGS and contributing networks in the last week (168 hours). Magnitudes 6 and above are in red. (Some early events may be obscured by later ones on the maps.)

The most recent earthquakes are at the top of the list. Times are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Click on the word "map" to see a ten-degree tall map displaying the earthquake. Click on an event's "DATE" to get a detailed report.

DISCLAIMER - The maps and lists show events which have been located by the USGS and contributing agencies within the last 7 days. They should not be considered to be complete lists of all events M2.5+ in the US and adjacent areas and especially should not be considered to be complete lists of all events M4.0+ in the world. The World Data Center for Seismology, Denver (a part of the USGS National Earthquake Information Center) continues to receive data from observatories throughout the world for several months after the events occurred, and using those data, adds new events and revises existing events in later publications. For a description of these later publications and the data available, see Scientific Data.
