The gas plant inquiry speaks volumes about the morality, or lack thereof, of our present-day politicians.
Politicians are forced to defend their own party’s point of view and this, more often than not, means that they have to lie to their own consciences to do so. Unless they are strong willed conscientious objectors (which is usually the death knell of a politician) they have to learn to use all their intellectual powers and faculties to fool themselves - so much so that their lying words become all the more believable to others. They ultimately end up believing their own lies and living in a world of make-believe.
It is the land of Humpty Dumpty where words mean whatever one wants them to mean. As Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and her predecessor Dalton McGuinty have recently demonstrated (with regard to the gas plant cancellations) this is the life of a politician. It is a life where lies and truth are interchanged with meaningless rapidity and fluidity as if they were both equally one and the same. Is it any wonder that we live in such a decadent, immoral society?
