The Prison of the Mind--Will You Be Free or Slave?

Now we have come full circle, back to where we had started when we entered the Village. This is reminiscent of Number 6's opening words with Number 2 when he had first arrived. Number 6 maintained that he is a free man. Number 2 told him he is there to break him. This is the question to us all. Will we be free men or will we succumb to the current ethos and be slaves to the world system? Will we so-called Christians remain cloistered behind church walls, or will we summon the courage to re-enter the marketplace of ideas.

We have another chance; we, and I am speaking as a boomer, squandered our chance. I remember the charismatic renewal of the 1970s, where millions of young people were born again, including many Catholics. The Catholic Charismatic renewal was a fervent prayer of Pope John XXIII, who wanted the winds of Pentecost flowing through the Catholic Church. I remember new believers sharing the Gospel with anyone and everyone. I remember talking to my Roman Catholic born again cousins, who said they talked with Jesus daily. I thought they were weird, that is, until I was born again in the 1990s. I remember the "March for Jesus" parades that swept both the US and Canada. But all that initial enthusiasm seems to have waned.

But now there is something in the air. You can see it with the Campus rallies in the US, where thousands of young people are coming to Christ. God is on the move. He is moving Sweden^[1] with many young people responding to the Gospel. He is moving in South America. He is moving in the east, especially in China. He moving in the Middle East, both amongst the Jews and Muslims, in fact, the fastest growing church is in Iran.

This brings us back to “The Prisoner’. Will we be free or will be slaves? In the second to last episode, Number 6 and Number 2 are locked in a psychological battle which would bring the death of one or the other. Number 6 prevails and in the final episode he finally meets Number 1. He appears as someone in a white hooded robe wearing a black and white mask. Number 6 rips the mask off to reveal a monkey mask. He rips off the monkey mask only to confront – himself. He is Number 1. The prevailing of Number 6 over Number 2 is a metaphor of the individual prevailing over the collective, and as a Christian, I would add, an individual standing with Christ.

This was revealed during the conversation between Alex Jones and Roger Avary^[2].

ALEX: What you are saying about, you are number 1, is that we are all number 1. When we realize it, is that the globalists are not in full control unless we give the control over to them.

ROGER: And that control happens here (pointing to his head) ... You are free or imprisoned here, not the walls around you. This is what I learned when I was released, is that it (prison) was just a facsimile of the real world. The world is just as much a prison, it’s just that the walls are further away ...

And through predictive programming and revelation of the method, they (globalists) put forward these ideas of reality ... When you’re with a narcissist, they will put you down. And by putting you down it’s almost like a spell, and it can affect you when they manifest the word.

When we talk about God, it’s the Word ... speech and the construction of language is the word and that is how power is created, and people use neural-linguistic programming, especially in Hollywood and through movies. Movies are a kind of spell, and you can do a good spell or you can do a bad spell. And you put these ideas out into the universe through cinema and when we watch movies, we are affected by these ideas. And the vast majority of the population is very monkey-see, monkey-do; they’re asleep, and I don’t mean it as a slag on humanity. PEOPLE NEED TO WAKE UP! ...

Roger Avary said that the real prison is in your mind, not the walls around you. In C.S. Lewis’ book, “The Pilgrim’s Regress”, referred to by Ravi Zacharias^[3], Lewis chronicles his journey to faith. He characterized the world of secularism, The Spirit of the Age, as a jailor and his life as a prison. He relates a confrontation between The Spirit of the Age and John (his persona in the book). He was drinking a glass of milk and commented on how good it tasted. The Spirit of the Age began his usual deconstruction, saying that its taste is irrelevant, that milk is just another secretion. John yelled back “You lie! You lie because you do not know what nature has meant for nourishment and what nature has meant for garbage”. This is the problem with secularism. We are just matter, just a bit of flotsam and jetsam. There is no such thing as meaning and purpose. There is no difference between killing a child or removing a wart.

A lot of time and money has been spent on understanding why life is so bad for so many, as evidenced by the high levels of anxiety, depression and suicide today, especially among young people. This is in part due to a growing sense of powerlessness because we have abandoned our self-sufficiency for the sufficiency of the state, which is always inadequate. The world's solution is more psychotherapy and psychogenic drugs. The problem is these only manage the problem. They only offer a means to cope with the situation. People don't want to learn how to cope; people want deliverance. Deliverance only comes from a deep and abiding relationship with the One who created you, who knows you, who understands what you are going through--God, Jesus Christ.

You can lean on the state, or you can lean on Jesus. The choice is yours. God wants you to depend on Him, and when you do, you become free. The state wants you to depend on them, and when you do, you become their slave. The Spirit of the Age wants to drag you down to the lowest common denominator. God wants to raise you up so that you can realize your full potential as a human being. As a Christian, I live a life of dependence on Jesus. When I am beset with unrighteous thoughts, I know I can call out to Him for deliverance and He will deliver me; the thoughts and feelings that were plaguing me gone, once again freed from the prison of my own sinful thoughts.

This idea of the world as a prison is echoed in the final scene of the final episode of “The Prisoner”. Number 6 had escaped the Village and returned to his home. He gets in his car, and as he drives off, Angelo Muscat, who played Number 2’s butler in the series, turns to enter the house, and as he does, the front door opens automatically … just as it had in the Village.
