Top Senate Republican already wimping out on Trump tax cuts
No one has ever mistaken Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for a leader.
So it is not surprising that
McConnell is giving a cool reception to President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to implement the biggest tax cuts since Ronald Reagan's presidency.
"I think this level of national debt is dangerous and unacceptable," McConnell said. "My preference on tax reform is that it be revenue neutral" -- whatever that means.
It would cost McConnell nothing at this point to put on a happy face and say he agrees with Trump's tax cuts at least in principle. But he's already piling on conditions which is not a good sign.
Of course it's early yet -- Trump's won't be president for a month and the 115th Congress won't convene until Jan. 3 -- so McConnell could change his tune but his initial reaction is not encouraging.
