Why did men riding Greyhound bus not rush and overcome killer who beheaded fellow passenger?

The Canadian beheading-on-the-bus story is as mysterious as it is horrifying. Imagine a young man on the long road home, snoozing, lulled by his earphones as the Greyhound bus lumbers along remote roads through the Canadian Prairies. Unspeakable as events were, it was to take two days before the story was carried by the mainstream media.
It took minimal time for fellow passengers to flee to safety as the young man was being hacked to death. We now know that likable, 22-year-old Tim McLean was the innocent victim. We now know that 40-year-old Vince Weiguang Li, is the alleged killer. Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) referred to Li as “Badger” on an audio that was not supposed to surface on the Internet.
