Woman fatally shot by Fairfax police during knife attack, chief says

A Fairfax County police officer fatally shot a woman in a mental health crisis Monday morning after she attacked him with a knife in a hallway of a Reston apartment building, slashing the officer’s face several times, Police Chief Kevin Davis said.

The incident began about 10 a.m. after an officer was dispatched to the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive to check on the welfare of a 33-year-old woman whose mental health counselor had notified police that she was in an agitated state, Davis said.
