15-year-old boy stranded on an overturned boat with his older brother and cousin

Adam White, the captain of the Northwest Explorer, spotted the boy in the frigid water, about 50°, who had overturned while fishing for halibut with his brother and his cousin.

The U.S. Coast Guard had been searching for the boat since Sunday night after they were last seen leaving Savoonga on Friday.

The boy's mother said that her youngest son was the sole survivor after surviving days without food or water.

The older brother, who was the boat's captain, died after becoming trapped under the boat, and the cousin survived for a day alongside the youngest before he passed away.

White recalled, “When you look into a family member’s eyes ... there’s gratitude, but sorrow at the same time… I know I became overwhelmed with it, so I had to go hide in my room for a minute.”
