Raptors, Eagles and the windfarms that kill them

36 - 200 eagles killed each year at Wyoming windfarm

The Chokecherry and Sierra Madre windfarm will have 1,000 wind turbines of 3 MW each.
"But for now, the agency (Bureau of Land Management) uses a rate that expects four raptors will die per year for every 100 megawatts of wind power generation. That means the Chokecherry and Sierra Madre wind project could kill 120 raptors a year, including 36 golden eagles. " "That's a far lower number than an estimate produced by HawkWatch International, a Salt Lake City-based nonprofit group dedicated to monitoring and protecting birds of prey. The group predicted more than 700 raptor deaths at the project per year, including more than 200 golden eagles." Trib.com

Considering the cumulative effect of so many wind turbines built and to be built in wilderness areas, Save the Eagles International warn that the Golden Eagle is likely to become extinct in the United States. California's GE population has already plunged under the effects of its wind farms, regardless of assertions to the contrary by consultant WEST Inc. which is being paid by windfarm interests to survey GE populations from an airplane. Not the most accurate of methods, opines STEI: among other things, seen from above a young bald eagle is easily confused with an adult golden eagle.
