Betsy Devos is the new Education Secretary, like it or not. Her nomination and confirmation have understandably, struck a nerve within the education community and have caused the American people to analyze our feelings regarding public education. I'll wager that parents in Englewood view public education very differently than those in some other communities on either side of the county line.

Education is a community affair, parent involvement is encouraged and welcomed, support programs are on campus or made available through referrals, and the school has a history with their families. Any event will bring at least three generations of people who have been active with the school for years. Some teachers are on their second generation students. Our schools represent the best of public education. We must recognize we are blessed. Not everyone has good, nurturing schools. Not all schools can adapt to the unique problems of their students. Not all schools have wide community support and participation. And, not every child is best served by public education. Shouldn't we build on what is proven to work, eliminate what is proven not to work, return more control to the state and stop fearing change? This should be about what is best for each child .
