CUPW Supports Occupy Toronto: 600 postal workers rally in the financial district

TORONTO, - Over 600 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers will join Occupy Toronto, the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP), the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), the United Steelworkers (USW) and the Toronto and York Region Labour Council at a rally in Toronto's financial district today at King and Bay.

Postal workers from across the country are in Toronto for the CUPW National Convention. Among the many issues being discussed on the convention floor are the federal government's interference in collective bargaining and its attack on workers' right to strike. Convention delegates unanimously passed an emergency resolution of support for the Occupy movement, taking up a collection on the convention floor. "We want to show our contempt for a financial elite that destroys jobs, hurts workers and impoverishes communities," said Denis Lemelin, CUPW National President.

Steelworkers are also joining the rally to highlight the Bank of Montreal's role in the forced strike at Infinity Rubber. "The 23-month strike at Infinity Rubber, now one of the longest in Toronto's history, shows that attacks on workers and decent jobs are fully supported by finance capital," said Lemelin. "Your struggle is our struggle. We are part of the 99%," proclaims a flyer issued by CUPW for the rally.
