Propane Industry Excluded from Transportation Roadmap
Propane is the third most widely-used transportation fuel, and the number one alternative transportation fuel.
OTTAWA, - The Canadian Propane Association (CPA) was disappointed to learn that propane was not included in the launch last week of the Natural Gas Use in the Canadian Transportation Sector Deployment Roadmap, a collaboration between government and industry to develop the market for natural gas as a transportation fuel.
In a letter sent to the Hon. Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, Jim Facette, CPA President & CEO, said, “as a natural gas liquid, propane should receive the same opportunities as its methane cousin, and therefore it deserves to be a part of the Roadmap initiative.”
"Propane is a safe, clean and affordable energy source and should be among the alternative fuels promoted by any government,” said Mr. Facette. “Approximately 80% of Canadian propane is sourced from natural gas, and roughly half of all supplies are exported. Compared to conventional energy sources, propane produces lower GHG emissions and air toxins in virtually every application it is used.”
With over 15 million propane vehicles on the road worldwide, propane is the third most widely-used transportation fuel, and the number one alternative transportation fuel. In Canada, there is already an extensive, existing refuelling network of over 2,000 refuelling stations, with one of the lowest costs to install new infrastructure when compared to other alternative fuels.
“Propane is an alternative transportation fuel that is abundant and available now,” added Mr. Facette, “including propane in initiatives like the Natural Gas Use in the Canadian Transportation Sector - Deployment Roadmap, promotes another clean, cost effective and sustainable option when considering energy alternatives.”
