Tell Sarkozy that you stand with Israel

Ambassador Delattre: We Stand with Israel Dear Ambassador François Delattre; I was deeply disturbed to learn that President Sarkozy told President Obama that he "can't stand" Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu and that he believes the Israeli leader is a "liar."

These are unusually strong words. To my knowledge, President Sarkozy has never used such language about Palestinian President Abbas who, unlike Netanyahu, has fueled the conflict with repeated historical distortions. What's more, such language raises the troubling possibility that your president's personal animus has influenced French policy. In September, Prime Minister Netanyahu made a powerful defense of his nation and direct negotiations before the United Nations. Yet earlier this month, France ignored Netanyahu's plea and voted to admit "Palestine" as a full member of UNESCO. Could it be that your leadership dismissed Israel's powerful argument as lies? We pray that France will overcome such personal pettiness -- and misunderstandings of fact -- and choose to vote against the Palestinian request for unilateral recognition at the United Nations Security Council. We pray for a full reconciliation between leaders and nations so that we in the West can stand united against the common enemies that threaten us all.
