We should also think carefully about any rezoning or permitting of new malls.
Online shopping is up
Pardon me for my ignorance on this subject, but what is wrong with retailers? Macy's, Kohl's and JC Penny all reported lower that expected earnings. Macy's is closing stores. Stores are leaving malls. Yet retail sales are up. It seems obvious that there is a trend toward alternative purchasing options, like on line shopping. As a matter of fact Amazon has bet the farm on it. And it makes sense. Older people don't like the mall, younger people prefer the expanded choices and ease of electronic shopping.
It seems to me the number of malls will diminish as time goes on. City and County planners should be looking at ways to mitigate that impact right now. The handwriting is on the wall. We could, for once, be ahead of the trend. We should also think carefully about any rezoning or permitting of new malls.
