Standardized testing on the wane in Canada, limiting ability to assess classroom performance


VANCOUVER—Standardized testing is on the decline in Canada, which will limit the ability of parents, teachers and principals to measure student performance and the overall health of the education system, finds a new study released today by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank. “The decline of standardized testing in Canada has reduced the availability of important student achievement data, which is essential in understanding how our education system performs,” said Michael Zwaagstra, a public high school teacher, senior fellow of the Fraser Institute and author of The Decline of Standardized Testing in Canada.
