Survival and Respect for Our Food Sources



I am obsessed with the show ALONE for several reasons. Number one is the killing of animals which I could not do. I do eat meat and I know how and where my meat comes from.

I watched my Mom kill chickens and saw her holding its head while the body was dancing in the grass, dying. She then submerged the whole thing in boiling water to make it easier to pluck its feathers. I always left the tiny apartment because the smell made me sick to my stomach.

When I was growing up, I knew Grandpa slaughtered a pig every year for the extended family during the Christmas feast. The red blood splattered in the white snow remains in my memory to this day. In retrospect, it did not look like a humane killing and the pig knew what was happening to him.

Woops old farmer here, grandparents too, not my parents though, they were city slickers through and through. Although the rest of my family brothers and sister stayed city slickers they all wanted the good food I grew very carefully. My husband who was born in 1939 Germany lived through the war, his father (a Nazi) kept his family moving to the safest areas as much as possible and yes they knew hunger, he had an older sister and a younger brother, their story was very sad but back to the farm. My husband had no knowledge of farming really but was very happy about having all our won food grown on the farm even a creek and ponds to fish in.
It is a very nature loving kind of life, a big circle, the 2 1/2 acre garden needed the composted fertilizer the animals provided, they animals were fed fruit and vegetables from the garden. We harvested fields of corn wheat, and varying other crops for hay for bedding straw and feed. Of course we sold some too.
Long heavy hard work seven days a week sometime pretty much 24 hours a day, we had the kids and a farm hand who was a black smith also and worked off the farm as well. I loved this life we also had a large ften54orested areas. We raised cattle, chickens egg and meat, geese, ducks, turkeys, (pigs only 3 every 2nd year) then of course pets horses dogs and cats. Of course the children would arrive home sometimes with other animals. I really miss living on the farm it is a good community of hard working good people.

Just a follow up though. I understand why people are becoming afraid of the way these industrial run farms are, the mistreatment of unhappy dirty very often unwell animals crowded and fed poorly and too much chemical use on huge mono (now more common GMO) cropping fields would make me sick. The over processed and added chemicals food scares me all made in huge factories with overworked minimum wage workers? But I am getting used to it when I have had to now.
