David Price Townhall

Approximately 850 people attended this Townhall meeting, which was sponsored by SEANC (State Employees Association of North Carolina). A SEANC leader started the Townhall claiming their organization was totally non-partisan but quickly proved to very partisan as the remainder of his speech was spent extolling the virtues of Obamacare.

SEIU, the nation's fastest-growing labor union, currently has 2.2 million members. It has spent $61-million to help elect President Obama and has set aside $10-million to push Obama’s agenda in its post-election “Change That Works” campaign. Currently, 17% of American health care workers are now in SEIU, but it would like to sign up the other 83%. The four speakers of this particular town hall meeting were: the head of the SEIU Local 2008, Chuck Stone, Dr. Greenburg (a charity Dr. and Community Activist) and lastly Rep. David Price. Yet all speeches included avid pro Universal Health Care proponents. Each speaker enforced the new Democratic talking points and did not include anyone with opposing viewpoints. For example: David Price never seemed to listen to the opposing side and used all of his questions to support the president and Democratic Platform. There were other examples of SEANC's Obamacare bias. The SEANC handout had a form with questions to give to local and state officials so we could express our view point, but it was entirely designed for use in the Pro universal health care argument. Ex. "Have you or someone close to you struggled to afford Health Care or gone without insurance? Please explain:" or "We need to make sure that our elected officials understand this health care crisis is about real people and not just big insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies. Please use the rest of this page to share your personal story with us." SEANC's Media Advisor also clearly shows their bias. One of the attendees summed it up quite nicely.

"They spent the first 5 minutes assuring the crowd that they were a non-partisan group. They then spent the next 55 minutes reading straight from Democrat talking points! They then opened it up to questions, for only another 45 minutes, 1/2 of that time dedicated to those who support the bill and 1/2 who oppose. By the time Mr. Price answered questions from both sides, that left only 10 questions from those who seriously oppose the current house bill. This meeting was many things. One thing IT WAS NOT was a fair representation of the current sentiment that makes up this debate."

It was clear the pro universal health care was the "organized" group with their common purple shirts and a large union presence. Union-run Security banned any posters but allowed 8 1/2 by 11" printed paper. Pro Obamacare supported just happened to have preprinted signs which were given to all supporters. These same signs have been present at multiple Townhalls. Other than not letting both side know the rules, there is nothing wrong with this, it just is another which side is grass roots and which is organized from above. The moderator seemed fine with cheers but made several attempts to silence the boos by threatening to throw those people out. With even numbers on both sides, it quickly became a heated debate. However, it was a pro healthcare supporter who ended up punch someone that was against Obamacare. Sadly, as security officials took away the assailant, Obamacare supporters mocked the victim, asking him, “do you have health care?”. A video of this incident is listed below. What is sad to me is the blind faith of the well intentioned pro universal health care folks. It seemed clear they were not familiar with the bills in Congress but rather the Democratic talking points. The pro side arguments were primarily based off emotion, whereas the anti universal health care folks came with facts and specifics from the HR 3200 bill. David Price's mind was made up before the meeting so he just kept to the party line. As a result it came across as more of a pep rally and Bush bashing than a true attempt to hear what the other side had to say. This same group was also at Senator Kay Hagan’s Townhall meeting.
