How can progressive, liberal Democrats continue with their hostile government takeovers, bribery, cronyism, profligate spending and coddling of terrorists in the current political environment? The answer is quite simple, really. As the great Michael Savage was first to point out, liberalism is a mental disorder. Progressive liberalism is so insidious, often times the afflicted are caught unawares. It is bipartisan, infecting Republicans and Democrats alike ever since America's post-Civil War industrial expansion and continuing to this very day.
In order to fully understand what infects the mind of today's rabidly progressive liberals, we have to go back to the beginning. Late 19th century and early 20th century presidents such as Arthur, Cleveland, Taft, Wilson, Hoover, the Roosevelts and Harry Truman intruded into our lives like never before, spawning government behemoths that still haunt us today. Measures and institutions such as the New Deal, the Civil Service Commission, the Federal Reserve, The National Parks system, the graduated (progressive) income tax, Social Security, the United Nations, the Interstate Commerce Act and even the "first hundred days" yardstick by which all presidents are now measured.
These actions began what we now recognize to be the unchecked growth of federal power, the cycle of generational dependence, the expense, entitlement and government gridlock caused by so-called "civil servants", government-sanctioned currency and market manipulation, seizures of private land and wealth.
With very few exceptions, today's progressives, like their turn-of-the-century predecessors, believe that government, particularly presidents, have a unique, moral obligation to flex federal executive muscle whenever and wherever they perceive the slightest imbalance or injustice.
We see this repeatedly with Barack Obama, cheapening and denigrating his office by injecting himself and his tremendously fragile ego into your living room to regulate every aspect of your life. Whether it's a press conference over what he perceives as the economic injustices of bankers, insurance companies and Wall Street "fat cats", health care summits to correct the misconceptions and ignorance exhibited by the unwashed peasants who won't accept his seizure of 1/6th of our economy, arrogant, misguided lectures from the podium about imaginary racism by a Cambridge Mass. police sergeant merely responding to a call for help or even broadcasting White House photo-ops with his crack, national security team in the Situation Room; a stoic, cool, in-control Commander-In-Chief carefully wondering how he can help a modern, developed South American country with a democratic government, a modern military and long history of large seismic events that hadn't formally asked for it.
Public opinion is solidly against continued profligate spending and the expanded government control that Obama Care will bring. Support of these policies has already resulted in several forced retirements and voters are in a foul mood. Those who continue to foist their failed, socialist ideology upon those who refuse to accept it will be jumping into a political bloodbath where their careers will end, not with a bang, but a whimper. Yet still they continue. I certainly can't disparage their persistence.
Socialism is a transitional state; the middle ground between Capitalism and Soviet-style Communism
Last Sunday, Nancy Pelosi admonished her battered party to push forward on health care, even if they end up losing their jobs. The question remains "Why?" Why would these people willingly fall on the sword and commit political suicide by forging ahead on massive legislation that has so much public opposition? Once again, liberalism is a mental disorder, brought on in this particular generation of progressive politician by the ingestion of far too much LSD. They truly believe that they are fulfilling the promise of turn-of-the-century, Progressive stalwarts who saw universal health care as a right.
Socialism is a transitional state; the middle ground between Capitalism and Soviet-style Communism. Many would argue that Socialism is the Progressive end, while Obama's socialist agenda is the means to arrive there. But, the end is actually pure Communism, with Obama-style Socialism constituting but a baby-step in that direction. The very nature of the Progressive Movement dictates that unless there is constant, perpetual progress (or change), the movement will die.
As I predicted last year, progressive Democrats are forging ahead, ready to force Americans, not just into accepting a radical, expensive behemoth they do not want, but making them participate. Whether enough Democrats will get in line and willingly commit political suicide to achieve that end remains to be seen, although I believe they will. While that's somewhat comforting, it won't stop them from enacting this century-old nightmare. But, when they are tossed out on their behinds, those who replace them must swear to repeal every last word of this un-Constitutional, unacceptable and un-American piece of socialist claptrap masquerading as "reform".
