January Auto Sales Start the Year Slightly Softer

TORONTO – Despite strengthening consumer confidence, the new year began where December left off, with sales to open the year down 2.2% from January 2012. Total unit sales in January were 95,306. While consumer confidence in January reached its highest level since June 2011 according to the Conference Board of Canada, this did not translate into stronger overall vehicle sales.
January’s sales, however, continued the trend of being stronger than the 5 year average (88,652). “It needs to be remembered that last January was very strong and having sales this January continue the trend of being stronger than the five year average for the month bodes well moving into the year,” said David Adams, President of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC). “It is clearly a very competitive marketplace for all manufacturers,” added Adams The members of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC) saw sales decrease collectively by 8.8% to 48,424 compared to January 2012 . Total passenger car sales fell 5.2% in January to 39,009 units, while light truck sales were essentially flat at 56,297 units. AIAMC members car sales fell by 10% to 28,627 units, while light truck sales declined 7% to 19,797 units. January also marked a return to truck sales commanding a larger share of the market moving up to 59.1% of the marked compared to 57.8% last January.
