Globe and Mail comment Vimy Ridge day 2010

Multi-Cultural Canada Should Respect Canadian Heritage

"Today the Canadian Red Ensign is flying over the Historical Canadian National War Memorial in Ottawa that was built in honour of all those Canadians that died in World War One, by their generation of Canadians. That flag should be there flying every day, forever for the sake of truth and honour and every Canadian that cares." CORRECTION; After seeing some news pictures and speaking to a good friend at this ceremony, I now realize the old flag was on a pole the size of a coat rack and my friends Canadian Red Ensign was flying higher on a tent pole in the crowd and that is in a CBC online article picture.

It should be flying there every day. I have also been told by another friend that is a commentator at Vimy Ridge legion tours in the summer that the flag poles at Vimy Ridge have been reconfigured and moved and now that Canadian Red Ensign is on another tiny flag pole out side the building created for rainy days and talking about the tour. We sent notarized letters from Mr. Babcock and Wilson when they were the last two surviving First War Veterans asking the Prime Minister to fly the Canadian Red Ensign at Vimy Ridge not for just one ceremony but forever, as a permanent visible reminder of all those the monument represents. What is the problem? Is someone being insulted? Surely in this "New" Canada and it's multicultural theme there's room to recognize and respect some of our own Canadian culture. It's not very much to ask. Bill B.
