President Trump continues to reverse some of the Obama Era policies and actions. Thank goodness. In Nevada, Obama expanded just one Monument (not a park) by more than 1,000 square miles. In total, he increased federal lands by more than 1 million acres. By designating or expanding federal holdings, he removed a state's right to govern their own land.
Currently, over 25% of Florida is public land, Nevada, where the kerfuffle is based, is over 75% public land, nearly all managed by the Federal Government and they are doing a lousy job. Invasive species and wildfires are constant threats due to lack of prevention. The cost of acquiring, staffing and maintaining all that land is outrageous. This is another example of federal overreach, if the people in a state want more public land, it is their right to buy it, support it and govern it. Acquisition of land for Federal Parks and monuments was originally designed to give Americans access to some of our natural wonders. Increasingly, it has become a tool to remove the possibility of private enterprise making money or to preclude states from having control of their own lands. While I recognize that the government would like us herded up into "walkable communities" where they can keep an eye on us, that defies human nature. It also denies the American dream of a house and a little land to call our own. Public land enhances the American experience but there has to be a point where enough is enough.
