Sudden resignation of Ontario’s embattled Premier, Dalton McGuinty

TORONTO Today, the National Citizens coalition was surprised by the sudden resignation of Ontario's embattled Premier, Dalton McGuinty. "We have had very little confidence in Premier McGuinty's ability to lead Ontario out of deficit by 2017," says Peter Coleman, President and CEO of the National Citizens Coalition. "On that front, this is good news for taxpayers."

The circumstances around McGuinty's decision remain unclear. Earlier this week documents were released that indicate the Liberal government had sought to hide the true costs of cancelled power plants in Oakville and Mississauga. "It is difficult to know what to make of this - Dalton McGuinty was certainly a disastrous Premier for Ontario, but those waiting in the wings have hardly proven themselves effective MPPs and Cabinet Ministers," continues Coleman. With a budget deficit of nearly $15-billion this year, Ontario is in a precarious position. Taxpayers remain on the hook for the many failed projects of Dalton McGuinty from eHealth to ORNGE. This government has also failed to control public sector wages and program spending - and they will now face increased uncertainty with lenders and credit markets. "Ontario's hardworking taxpayers deserve a government that we can trust. We deserve a commitment to accountability - and strong leadership.
