The flat tax is truly “fair”

The only way for taxpayers to pay their "fair share" is for there to be a flat percentage tax. That's how Jesus felt regarding tithing. He didn't say the rich should tithe more, he said everyone should give 10% of their income to the church.

He also didn't make up a bunch of complicated rules by which the people could lower their 10%. In every aspect of our lives the rules are so convoluted that two lawyers interpret them differently -- thus all the cases in courts. The citizenry should not be governed by rules they do not understand and, worse yet, that no one can explain to them. Life doesn't have to be this complicated. We should not need high priced accountants to help us figure our "fair share" to send in on April 15th of each year, and we don't need the legions of IRS personnel trying to catch us cheating. The reality is that most taxpayers will easily err on their returns. If a simple percentage calculation was all that we required we could cut a huge department of the federal government. It is time to cut the size and scope of government. This is a logical first step. Hillary Duke Englewood, FL
