"GOP House Uprising" Oil drilling offshore

The revolution that evolved when the Dems headed out for summer holidays

By Eric Odom Yeah, weird isn't it? In fact, it's almost an oxymoron. But that appears to be the case when it comes to pushing through an energy bill for a vote. Unfortunately, the Democrats aren't having any of it.

If you haven't been following the wild "GOP House Uprising", you'll definitely want to read on. Fasten your seat belts, folks, this is going to be a wild ride. Last Friday House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led Democrats into a vote against a vote on the energy bill. Let me be clear here, the vote was a vote NOT to vote on the energy bill. Essentially, Democrats knew that Republicans wanted to force them into voting for a bill that included offshore drilling, something that most Americans support, but almost all Democrat leaders oppose. A vote on the bill right before the session would have caused serious political harm directly before election season, and this is something the center-left powers in Washington simply will not allow. Indeed, Democrats knocked the potential vote down. But something completely unexpected happened next. After the vote not to vote, Republicans continued to discuss energy on the House floor. Not entertained by this at all, and knowing that cspan was still taping, Pelosi shut down Congress. Pelosi went as far as having the House sound system shut off, the lights turned out, and the cameras powered down. Democrats ran straight for their gas guzzling vehicles and flights because they wanted out of town. Remember, August 1st marks the beginning of a five week vacation for Congress. While the rest of Americans suffer under tremendous economic pressure caused by rising fuel costs, Democrats just wanted to get out of town. Heck, Nancy Pelosi just kicked off her new book tour, so she needs to promote herself and make some money, not do her job and help you HAVE some money. Now, this is where it gets REALLY good. Not only did the Republicans CONTINUE speaking on the floor, even in the dark... they began organizing and debating. Rep. Culberson and several others were using online tools like Twitter and Qik to converse with the online realms, which brought about something much, much bigger than anyone could have ever for seen. At about 4:00 PM, Allen Fuller of Flat Creek Strategies and myself opened up an instant message and decided to start a tag to follow the happenings. This tag, now becoming the central keyword for an online movement, was to be "#dontgo". At the time, we figured this tag would just be a great way to keep track of Twitter posts. We had no idea what we were in for... Five days later, we have http://www.dontgo.us to track all of the Twitter comments. We now have seven, yes SEVEN US Representatives actively communicating with us using the site (and they say the left is beating us online... please). The site had tremendous success over the weekend, bringing in thousands of visits and forcing discussion on the issue from all areas of the internet. On Tuesday, August 5th, a reporter from CNN contacted me about the events that were happening. A few hours later, a major story went live on Anderson Cooper's Blog as well as several other CNN's blogs. The story was also being covered on Politico, RedState, The Next Right, Michelle Malkin, Hot Air Conservablogs, and many, MANY other online sources. Yesterday afternoon we launched the official #dontgo Movement website at http://www.dontgomovement.com and over the past 24 hours we have seen more than 60,000 visits. Our subscriptions have climbed into the thousands, and almost every free-market blog on the web is chatting up the fact that a new center-right uprising is underway, lead by House Republicans who are STILL on the floor debating energy and demanding that Democrats come back from vacation to fix this problem. So, now is the time. Now is the time for us to stand up and fight back the anti-free market movement like never before. The online realm is rallied, we have a winning message, and Republicans are acting like, well, like Republicans. But first, we need to poke at the left and have a little fun. In comes "Operation Expose the Pansies"... Beginning August 7th, 2008, we are asking anyone and everyone to purchase pansies (the flower) and deliver them to your representatives office (check the http://www.dontgomovement.com website to see if your rep is supporting the energy bill vote). You can purchase real pansies (or fake ones) and hand deliver them (make sure you get pictures and video), or you can have them delivered via flowers.com or any other online florist. We are also asking that you kindly attach a small note demanding that Congress reconvene immediately to vote on energy. The message is that it is time for elected officials to stop acting like pansies and DO SOMETHING for this country! For more information, please email me or call me using the information listed below. You can also do a Google search for "#dontgo" and "gop house uprising" to find out more. Please visit http://www.dontgomovement.com to get the latest updates, and tune in to the Hugh Hewitt Show at 4:30 Pacific time today to listen to us talk about the events happening in Washington.
