What is the fourth annual “Live Free or die Rally”?

- Richard H. (Dick) OlsonGeneral John Stark coined the state motto in 1809 when he said "Live free or die; Death is not the worst of evils." A fitting epitaph, perhaps, to the man who may have made it all possible for so many people to do just that. The fourth annual “Live Free or Die Rally” is a free educational forum in honor of New Hampshire’s own General John Stark, the forgotten revolutionary. This event is a grand lesson in history, restoring the values of the constitution, and a place for families to have fun and it is free.

Prior to the colonists winning their independence from the tyranny of the crown, they sought out a place for the citizens to voice their concerns and opinions freely. For example, Wyman’s Tavern, Keene, NH was such a gathering place. The Tavern’s chief claim to fame was where 29 patriots (including several of my Hall ancestors) heard the call to take up arms and marched to the battles of Lexington and Concord. As co-chairs of this year’s rally, Mike Coutu and I sought permission from Grand View Inn’s owners, the Mitchell family to use their 300 plus acre site as a likely place to honor General Stark. I find it interesting that while the local population has disdain for this event, most all remained in the background because they think there would be recriminations or retaliation against them, their families, or their businesses if they attend or speak. When Selectman Frank Sterling recently said; “I very much want you to have this event, but I want you to have it safely and I want you to have it reasonably.” I wondered if the other two members of the board felt the same. General Stark had perennial clashes with the ruling elite of the colonies and Mike and I have the same problems each year. We encourage every local citizen to attend to learn and have fun.
