From Russia—with Cold

Agent 007 had it easy. In the movie From Russia with Love, all he had to do was to prevent a typewriter-(remember those ?)-sized device fall into the hands of the other side. Now, the world is faced with a new and bigger problem, i.e. "From Russia - with Cold."

Walpurgis Night – A Pagan Tradition

Walpurgis Night is another pagan ritual celebrating the arrival of spring. According to Wiki, it is widely celebrated across much of central and northern Europe; I can attest to that.

Reusch’s Moraine – Another “Consensus” Gone Awry

There is a unique rock formation at Norway’s northern coast. Well, the rock itself is not unique at all, but its age is – 1,000 million years old. Actually, that age is not remarkable either as much of the earth’s surface is covered with ancient rocks of that age and older. So, what is so special about that particular rock?

Penguins are Cooling the Air!

A recent study found “Emperor penguin body surfaces cool below air temperature." The authors claim that the penguins’ plumage radiates heat which results in their surface temperature cooling below the ambient air temperature.

Better Look Happy!

Next time you are walking along the street and see a drone overhead -- better look happy. A twitching nose or a frowned forehead might give you away as an unhappy “customer.” Novel surveillance hardware and software will be able to detect that.

Colony Collapse Disorder

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) is the term used for the unusually large die-offs in honey bee colonies over winter. First observed about a decade ago, the “disorder” is back with a vengeance. While most prevalent in the US, European and other countries are starting to find similar problems though not yet at the same scale.

The Death Knell for the CO2 Theory

The death knell tolls for the Carbon Dioxide Greenhouse Gas Theory (CO2-GHT). If the CO2-GHT ever was a plausible theory, it is rapidly turning into a giant hoax. The perceived scientific underpinnings of the theory are unravelling fast.

The Cyber Wars

The cyber wars are in full swing. Your emails and web access are being used without your knowledge or consent to determine your e-behavior, various preferences, and anything else that can be gleaned from it. Hardly a day goes by without a large corporation (or government) confessing that their system has been compromised, usernames and passwords stolen, etc.

Chemistry of Yore and Now

Chemistry of Yore and Now

For many the field of chemistry is a terra incognita, an unknown world. This is odd if one considers that humans are virtually chemistry factories, ingesting, processing and producing chemicals throughout our lives. We routinely use a wide variety of chemicals without ever thinking of them in those terms, from detergents to medications. Besides, with all kinds of wonderful electronic gadgets, who needs to know anything about chemistry or chemicals anyway? On top of that, we are constantly told that chemicals are dangerous to our health. Everything else, including meteorites are too.

The Letter C

The letter C causes much grief. Why not get rid of it altogether? It would automatically solve such issues as carbon pollution, catastrophe avoided, climate change, concern about chemtrails, and confusion. The world would be well served to get rid of these C words.

Chrislam

According to Wikipedia, the term Chrislam originated in Nigeria in the 1980’s. Wiki describes it as "Chrislam uses both the Bible and Quran and sees them both as holy texts." In fact, the term Chrislam was first coined much earlier, namely by the British writer G.K. Chesterton in his book The Flying Inn, published in 1914.

1.5V, approximately!

All kinds of electronic gadgets need batteries. The 1.5V AAA and AA battery sizes are most common and available nearly everywhere. You’d think they are all the same, at least providing the claimed 1.5V DC voltage and differing only in total power available (capacity). Our experience tells otherwise.

Send Home a Postcard!

The planet Mars is Earth’s next of kin; just a little further out from the Sun. President Obama thinks we should go there with a manned mission. I wonder why? Is there a reason to visit Mars, other than to mark your bucket list with “been there, done that?”

Cold Heat

Have Cold, need Heat. Global temperature means haven’t risen for 16 years now but some politicians still think the globe is experiencing runaway overheating. At the -50 C/F in mid latitude Canada right now even the polar bears are not frolicking on the beaches, but elsewhere, the heat is being turned on; namely on the climate prognostications previously given by the proponents of global treaties to limit carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which have been claimed to be the mother of all evil.

The Alpha Squirrel and Me

Living at the city’s edge is wonderful. There are large native trees and shrubs, some with fancy flowers in spring, such as cottonwood and catalpa, and lots of wildlife. Among the latter are deer, raccoons, rabbits, foxes, skunks, opossums, groundhogs, squirrels, chipmunks, mice, shrews, and others. In summer, the air is full with colorful swallowtail and monarch butterflies, fancy moths such as the luna and sphinx, and a large assortment of birds, including chickadees, gold finches, cardinals, juncos, warblers, wrens, woodpeckers, ruby throated hummingbirds, and even the occasional raptor.
