Sales for the first half of 2010 were ahead significantly for many vehicle manufacturers having been augmented by a strong June compared to June 2009. Overall industry sales for June were up 11.6% to 154,564 units for June 2010 with first half sales for the industry up 9.1% to 786,401 units.
The month of June continued the May and April trend, with many AIAMC member companies experiencing double digit sales gains – including records - for June, while others continued to experience declines. The sales for members of the the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC) were down a modest 1.2% in June compared to last year (see attached) but are up 5.8% year to date.
“What you are seeing is some pretty strong sales results in June for the D3 complemented by some equally strong sales results from some of the AIAMC member companies” said association president, David Adams. “The issue may well be stripping out the fleet sales component from those overall sales results to get a better sense of the strength of consumer demand through the first half of the year,” added Adams. “With governments looking to wind down stimulus spending and other economic headwinds coming to the forefront in the last couple of weeks, automakers will need to continue to be creative in the packaging they put together for consumers to continue the good sales growth the industry has experienced so far this year into the second half.”
Truck sales overall increased 27.2% in June compared to a year ago whereas AIAMC member truck sales increased 6.5% compared to a year ago. Overall passenger vehicle sales were down 2% in June compared to last year, while AIAMC members passenger car sales were down 4.6%.
AIAMC members’ market share slipped to 50.5% for the month of June. On a YTD basis AIAMC marketshare is 53.7% .
