imageCell phones, long a favourite tool of terrorists (those who cause “man-caused disasters” in Obama speak) have now become the province of politicians. Purse snatchings, rape, murder and mayhem will still happen in the Big Apple (neck and neck with San Francisco as Grand Central Politically Correct) but folk in certain sections of the city will be forewarned of bomb threats and any hurricanes heading their way. “Emergency officials will soon be able to blast critical alerts to anyone with a cell phone in a certain section of the city.” (NYDailyNews.com, May 9, 2011).
If you’re too poor to own a cell phone, maybe seeing folk fleeing for their lives from Times Square will qualify as warning enough for you. "Making sure that [people] get useful and life-saving information, quickly and easily, right on their mobile phones, will help more people get out of harm's way when a threat exists," said Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator W. Craig Fugate. Finally, FEMA has found a way to get its message through to long suffering masses. “The system - called PLAN or Personal Localized Alerting Network - uses cell phone towers to send messages to everyone currently in a certain area, regardless of whether they're visiting from out of town or have a phone registered elsewhere. People won't have to register in advance to receive the alerts. “The messages, including urgent blasts from the President, information on imminent threats and Amber Alerts about missing children, will supercede all other phone traffic so they won't be stalled or delayed.” Rainbow coloured balloons and maybe even ticker tape floated through the skies over New York for the big announcement yesterday when FEMA’s Fugate and Federal Communications Julius Genachowski announced the new system at the World Trade Center site with Mayor Bloomberg and top phone company execs. While many try to forget Bloomberg, most will remember Obama distinguished czar Julie as the net neutrality guy bent on making the free market conform to a government-mandated vision. From the Rare Good News Dept. there will not be any more floods coming from the Mississippi or tornadoes in the mid-west. There can’t be as the system is expected to be up and running only in New York and Washington by the end of the year--months before the rest of the country. Mayor Bloomberg called the alerts a “quantum leap forward in using technology to help keep people safe.” The times they are a changing. Barack Obama’s latest message on fixing “America’s broken immigration” which went out into cyberspace last night, came with a real change. It was signed not as President Obama and not even Barry Soetoro but just “Barack” for the first time. here Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Patriot, ain’t technology liberating?
