A Paradox In the Fortune Cookie?

Having dined on Chinese food last evening, my dessert was held for this morning's breakfast. Carefully opening the Fortune Cookie, so as not to tear the document inside, I removed it for what would normally be a cursory view. The small paper said “Egg Roll” in English and with some Chinese symbols pronounced “chun juan”, the Mandarin or Cantonese lesson was complete for today. Reversing the paper for my fortune it stated, “Don’t kiss an elephant on the lips today”. Well, no trips to the zoo were in the schedule, so contemplation was in order for its application. I had intentions of personally following those instructions but headlines in the news media seemed to indicate some were giving other impressions.

During the last administration President Bush lifted the executive hold on drilling for gas and oil off the coast and awaited the sunset to pass on a previous law from Congress. We all are aware of some legislators, along with Speaker Newt Gingrich's plea for “Drill, Baby, Drill” in answer to our nations energy policy (we have none). Well, along came January 20th, 2009, and president Obama’s declaration that the country would not be held “hostage to dwindling resources, hostile regimes, and a warming planet”. His call for greater fuel efficiency and an “energy economy” aimed at creating millions of jobs was green oriented, as he soon reinstated the ban on offshore drilling. We are now fifteen months into the administration and in reality those energy jobs and the $100s of billions allocated in deficit spending have failed. Now Obama is the savior of a failed 20-year policy on drilling. Obama: Drill, Baby, Drill—Fox News Obama wants to lift coastal drilling ban---CNN Obama to Open Offshore Areas to Oil Drilling for First Time---The New York Times More important than just the headlines, the areas intended for release put any outcome further in the future. Areas of proven resource, as in Alaska’s Chukchi and Beaufort seas along with the West Coast of the U.S. are still being excluded. In spite of the massive take over of Health Care, Banking, Housing, Auto manufacturing, dictating of wage limits for private industry executives and a mountain of taxes coming, bribery, arm twisting and chicanery are the rule of the day in the Democrat controlled presidency and Congress. Lies and deceit are a continued methodology. Trillions of dollars later and nothing is accomplished except loss of independence and manipulated numbers claiming “Big Government” success. The fortune telling me “Don’t kiss an elephant on the lips today” is easily followed since I don’t really like their breath. Regardless, the true “Paradox in the Fortune Cookie” is achieved when instead of a small piece of paper, a giant piece is retrieved which states on one side “DNC” and on the other “Kiss my Donkeys’ Tail(a?s) Today”. This I will never do.
