Caution should prevail with President Obama's SCOTUS nomination

President Obama has tried and failed numerous times and ways to impose gun control on Americans. He's smart, he's crafty, and he is dogged. There are many routes to the same destination. We may be seeing that with the nomination of Merrick Garland. In his past decisions, Garland has given us a glimpse into his position on guns, he favors registration and restriction. Putting forth a nominee that furthers his agenda is just what has causes Republicans concern, especially at the Supreme Court level where a confirmation is for life. Obama has already placed two liberal judges on the court with his appointments of Sotomayor and Kagan. It is his right, as a sitting President, to nominate someone. It is the right of the Senate to take up the issue or not, to confirm or not. The path might be clearer for Merrick had the last 2 nominees been honest during their confirmation hearings and were they not so brazenly liberal. But with the court split 4 to 4, this nominee is the key vote. No one can seriously believe that this President will put forth a right or even centrist candidate. So, while some may view Republicans as obstructionists on this appointment, it could also be said that caution should prevail. Bruce Butler Englewood, FL
