The Gully of the Shadows of Death Disproved Critical Race Theory Over 50-Years Ago

The Gully of the Shadows of Death Disproved Critical Race Theory Over 50-Years AgoA half century ago, critical race theory — CRT — was the exclusive purview of “intellectuals” squirreled away in Ivory Towers; it wasn’t a concept normal people thought about. Of course, real working folks didn’t think about voluntarily swallowing excrement back then either. Things have changed significantly in 2021. But where, exactly, was the gully that disproved CRT and when was it? Place: The Ho Bo Woods near Cu Chi in the Republic of Vietnam. Date: Feb. 2nd, 1969. The shadows emerging from underground burrows that Groundhog Day delivered a really bad forecast, but none of silhouettes belonged to Punxsutawney Phil. These shadows were armed with AK-47s and RPGs, rocket propelled grenades. It was my first exposure to combat, an all-day battle where far too many of my Delta Company brothers were tagged with the initials KIA and WIA — killed in action and wounded in action. Having been in-country only 3 weeks, my day started as a squad leader but ended as the platoon leader. KIA and WIA were responsible.

WELCOME TO THE TUNNELS OF CU CHI!

Not once did I see an enemy combatant, only an occasional shadow or barrel of a weapon. WELCOME TO THE TUNNELS OF CU CHI! It started with a Delta platoon being ambushed at 0831 — 2 KIA, 5 WIA. The 2nd Battalion’s log that day had 158 entries with far too many including those notations; 0831 was entry #12. Our last of multiple assaults on the enemy position began at 1813, entry 135, and we finally made it well inside the tree line to a massive ravine … the Gully of the Shadows of Death. BOOM! Then, # hit the fan — BIGTIME!!! With the first machinegun burst from a shadowy hole in the side of the gully, our KIA/WIA numbers jumped again. Minutes later, Delta’s commander joined his troops lost that day. For anyone who experiences combat, it will likely be a difference-maker, positive and negative, for the rest of their lives. Remarkably, though, in the midst of the very worst humankind has to offer — WAR — you see the very best humankind has to give. Repeatedly, there are young U.S. troops — 18 and 19-year-olds — putting their own lives on the line to protect their brothers next to them … some of those brothers they may have known only a few days. I saw it over and over again that Groundhog Day, plus numerous times thereafter. Logic can’t explain that selfless commitment — “WE” versus “ME” in combat — to someone who hasn’t been there; not in a way they’ll feel to the core of their very being like those who’ve lived it. For anyone who has, those life and death fleeting moments will reside deep within … FOREVER! And for most, they’re 100% about “YOU” and “WE” — 0% “ME.” As a result, “WE not ME” became my shorthand description for selfless service in combat. The first time in print was in an article entitled, “Time Warp: 1969/70 Anarchy … Recycle 2019/20”. That piece focused on the insanity in America when I returned from Vietnam. The “Welcome Home” — finishing college in my hometown — inflicted more wounds than those in combat that nearly took my life; they healed more slowly too.

But HOW, exactly, did the Gully of the Shadows of Death disprove CRT?

But HOW, exactly, did the Gully of the Shadows of Death disprove CRT? It’s quite simple actually: “WE not ME.” On Groundhog Day in 1969, I learned that the often described brotherhood in battle is real. “WE” means EVERY combat brother. When the 1813 sweep turned apocalyptic at the gully, “WE not ME” saved numerous lives; regrettably, not all lives. The fact that there were multiple concealed tunnel openings behind us when we reached the ravine meant we could have lost many, many more. As stated in “Time Warp”, “In combat, unity equates to survival. It’s all about “WE not ME.” Living to see tomorrow takes race, ethnicity, and everything else out of the equation. If there were civil rights problems in the military in 1969, they were utterly undetectable within my Delta Company family. My brothers were just that: BROTHERS; black, white, pink, purple — TOTALLY irrelevant. I placed my life in their hands; they placed their lives in mine. That’s just the way it is in battle: it’s your family.” That’s about as diametrically opposed to CRT as it can get. And as concluded in the “Time Warp” article: “Thus, I left Vietnam knowing we are all ONE. [Deplorably] I came home to discover we’re NOT.” Critical race theorists — i.e., critical racists — WANT YOU TO BELIEVE we’re NOT; that America and everything about America has been race-based from the very beginning to the present time. They especially WANT YOU TO BELIEVE that every white person is a racist oppressor and every black person is an oppressed victim.

The Gully of the Shadows of Death proved otherwise — we are all ONE

The Gully of the Shadows of Death proved otherwise — we are all ONE. Critical race theorists — i.e., critical racists — DON’T BELIEVE in the U.S. Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal …”. They DON’T WANT YOU TO BELIEVE in it either. The Gully of the Shadows of Death proved “these truths to be self-evident” — we are all ONE. CRITICAL RACISTS are moving the U.S.A. backwards, towards segregation, something the civil rights movement a half century ago fought to eliminate. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his life fighting to end that despicable practice in America. Dr. Carol Swain, a black woman born in the segregated South, is a staunch opponent of CRT noting: “The demonization of one group of people [white Americans] because of the color of their skin is something that is discriminatory” (Epoch Times, June 22, 2021). As a result, she thinks CRT violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that protects ALL races. Hopefully, future litigation will prove her to be correct. Critical race theorists — i.e., critical racists — DON’T BELIEVE in the Land of the Free or the Home of the Brave. They DON’T WANT YOU TO BELIEVE in them either. The Gully of the Shadows of Death validated for me that America is the Land of the Free BECAUSE we’re the Home of the Brave — we are all ONE. But, how much longer will America be the Land of the Free if we’re not the Home of the Brave?

Imposing CRT on the military could easily end America’s status as being that Home of the Brave

Imposing CRT on the military could easily end America’s status as being that home. According to Afghanistan combat veteran, “Sean Parnell: Critical race theory ‘will cost lives on the battlefield’” (Fox News, June 25, 2021). He understands “it was the love and brotherhood that we had for one another that allowed us to defeat the enemy at every single turn.” And it was with his infantry platoon which was “probably the most diverse unit that you could possibly imagine.” There’s a good reason why Parnell is concerned that “the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs does not recognize the [CRT] threat.” With Delta’s 2nd Platoon in Vietnam a half century ago, “it was the love and brotherhood” — “WE not ME” — that allowed more of us to survive the Gully of the Shadows of Death. If CRT had been a component of military doctrine back then, there’s no doubt Delta would have sustained even more casualties on Groundhog Day and thereafter. Greg Gutfeld — a grenade thrower, but seldom confused with Rambo or the Terminator — figured out the problem with CRT “spreading in the military faster than a case of crabs” (adding, when they “get out of the crate, there goes supper”) (Fox News, June 25, 2021). His appraisal: “Now, if you wanna destroy a country — the first step would be to get its military to incorporate race-based self-immolation. China couldn’t have done it better if they were behind this. Maybe they are. It wouldn’t be the first deadly agent to originate in China and then go viral in the U.S.” That grenade certainly hit the target. Moreover, his judgment that CRT should really stand for CONDESCENSION RACE THEORY is pretty much spot on too. Hopefully, those falling for the sham will figure it out some day — SOON! The principal advocates of CRT are Marxists and Maoists — “Cancel Culture M&Ms” — who will celebrate when America’s democratic republic falls or is but a shell of what it once was. It’s rapidly getting there in 2021. As highlighted in that article regarding cancel culture M&M’s love-fest with CRT: “America’s future hangs in the balance. A civil war is raging today and those who love America are losing.” “WE not ME” patriots must make a stand NOW! Tomorrow may be too late. The critical racists’ condescension race theory must be stopped. FREEDOM IS AT STAKE!
