R.W. Trewyn Ph.D.

Ron Trewyn was a university professor 44-years, working in upper administration the last 28. Drafted into the Army in January 1968, he attended the Army NCO School after basic and advanced infantry training, graduating as a Staff Sergeant, E-6. In 1969, he served as a Platoon Sergeant and Platoon Leader in the Republic of Vietnam with Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry, 199th Light Infantry Brigade until wounded in action. After serving in the Army, he completed his undergraduate degree and earned a Ph.D. in microbial physiology with minors in biochemistry and genetics. Following 4-years of postdoctoral cancer research, he joined the medical school faculty and Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State University for 16-years. Thereafter, he served in a variety of central administration roles at Kansas State University, retiring as Vice President for Research Emeritus.

In the old days, what was called “biding our time” — waiting for something to happen, HOPING it was going to be good — has been redefined today to, “Biden our time” — waiting for something to happen, KNOWING it’s going to be bad. The acronym for either is BOT, but it’s clearly more relevant to the new iteration. Yep, a mindless BOT “ruining our time” — ROT — i.e., inflicting BOT ROT.

Daggers of Hate in American Eyes:Seeing daggers of hate in Americans eyes used to be a rare phenomenon. Now you can expect to see them daily, sometimes hour after hour, minute by minute. The first time I saw burning hatred, those daggers, in another person’s eyes was in early 1970 when I was finishing the last year of my undergraduate degree. The hate was directed at me, so that glare of sheer loathing stuck with me. Happily, though, a couple decades went by before the next dagger sighting. It was a different place and different eyes, yet also zeroed in on me. Hence, that occurrence was memorable as well.

Nonetheless, America became the savior of freedom and the cornerstone of the free world precisely because of that two-letter pronoun … WE! After WE, all other pronouns are inconsequential, bordering on meaningless, by comparison. Yet, in 2022, one pronoun has all but disappeared from everyday use in America … WE!

Merriam-Webster defines SS as the “German abbreviation for Schutzstaffel, literally, protection echelon; a unit of Nazis created as bodyguard to Hitler and later expanded to take charge of intelligence, central security, policing action, and the mass extermination of those they considered inferior or undesirable”. Gestapo was “a secret-police organization employing underhanded and terrorist methods against persons suspected of disloyalty”. Within the Nazi Party, the SS and Gestapo had separate, but collaborative missions — covert terminal missions.

Having been inundated with non-stop recall notices, I was taking my wife’s car to the dealership 50 miles away to get the driver-side airbag replaced. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and car companies have been persistent regarding this matter. Dysfunctional airbags in vehicles have been in the news repeatedly in recent years and the potential lethality tended to be the story lead. It’s scary stuff.

Urinating with SkunksDecades before today’s cancel culture gave birth to “woke, woker, and wokest,” attentiveness to racial and social justice facts and issues my mother repeatedly advised, “don’t get into pissing contests with skunks.” I was in elementary school 70 years ago plus or minus when I first heard her say it. Considering she’s been gone 10 years and lived to within 4-months of being 100, she had many, many years to articulate it. And, yes, she did so a LOT, especially, in her 80s and 90s. I can’t imagine how often she’d be saying it today with all the skunk balm being sprayed on TV and everywhere else.
