Newfie Moose Meat

Newfoundland finds itself in a transitional period where it hopes the off-shore oil industry will employ most of those idled by the collapse of the fishing industry.

The Sun-Sea incident

Sometimes the solution to a big problem is simple. The U.S. would not be having such a major headache with illegal Mexican immigrants, for example, if those who knowingly employed them were charged in the first place. Which brings me to the Sun Sea incident.

The best we can hope for in Afghanistan

Afghanistan was a bad war from the beginning because we insisted, at first, that we were there to destroy the Taliban and capture Osama bin Laden. Then, we were told we were there to impose democracy on a collection of warring tribes who have no idea what democracy is. Currently, we are told we are there to free the Afghan women from bondage.

Uneasy rider

I remember when heads would turn at the sight of an adult riding a bicycle on a downtown street in any big Canadian city. In those days, bikes, except for the ones used by delivery boys, were regarded as toys. Then the yuppies discovered the joy of pedal-power and suddenly there were so many bicyclists cluttering up the streets that our cities began to take on a European look. Bike lovers will tell you that their mode of transportation not only provides them with exercise, but is non-polluting, to boot. Bicycles are, of course, non polluting, and riding them in the country air would no doubt be beneficial to your health, but biking and breathing deeply of exhaust fumes on city streets is downright hazardous to your health. I never owned a bike when I was a kid, though I always wanted one. I did, however, have a few close encounters with other people’s bikes.

Iran

If Israel could find a way to destroy Iran, the loudest jeers, but secret cheers, would emanate from its Arab neighbours, who are predominantly Sunni, except for Iraq, who would love to see the Shiites wiped out.

Political wagon needs more than a new battery

In order to stall, you have to be running in the first place. Michael Ignatieff's political-wagon needs more than a new battery. It needs a new driver. When the best he can do is quote Hugo Chavez, you have to wonder where his touted brilliance is.

Creating life

They did no such thing. They only used material that was already there. It reminds me of the story of the scientist who told God that he could create life. "Show me."

Gay Signs

If some gays feel they have to carry protest signs on their Gay Parade, why don't they flaunt signs condemning the persecution of their fellow gays by the Palestinians?

McCarthyism in Canada

It's regrettable indeed when someone like CSIS director Richard Fadden indulges in McCarthyism. You would think Mr. Fadden would have known that his inflammatory comments were career busters.

Bad Manners

Paul McCartney seems to go out of his way to insult his hosts. Apparently, he didn't learn anything from the bad press he received over his seal-hunt protest here. Now he insults former president George Bush, while visiting the White House.
