The Ambiguous Nature of Canada's International Defense Posture

As Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine, an invasion that began formally with incursions into Crimea earlier this year -- but in reality began many years before with growing Russian influence in Ukraine's domestic politics, Canada's defense posture is becoming less clear over time.

US Jacks Up Exit Fee For Those Renouncing Citizenship

US Jacks Up Exit Fee For Those Renouncing Citizenship
Just like the recent rise of business inversions — moving business HQ abroad — the United States has seen an uptick (up 221%) in Americans renouncing their citizenship. The elephant in the room in both these cases is taxes: both high taxes and burdensome tax compliance in foreign jurisdictions.

Divide and Conquer: A Game of Thrones?

I recently attended my monthly book club group, which is comprised of women from differing political persuasions, including but not necessarily limited to conservatives and liberals. We can have some interesting discussions, as you might expect, especially when the topic broaches anything political.

The Undeniable Fact of Moose Jaw's Unchanging Climate

As an editorial in the Moose Jaw Times Herald claims, "Climate change is happening, and it won't be denied." Without any irony, the article states that "without an ounce of hyperbole, climate change is the single greatest issue the generations of age have to drive change and have to address right now." No hyperbole?

Mary Landrieu and Her House of Cards

Mary Landrieu and Her House of Cards
This election has been most difficult for U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) with one mistake after another taking her off message. First it was discovered that she was charging taxpayers for at least four campaign flights. Her embarrassing mistakes were not something Louisiana voters should expect from a Senator with so much experience. Mary Landrieu has been in political office since 1979 and has served in the U.S. Senate since 1997. It is inexcusable for Landrieu not to know that taxpayers should not be charged for campaign air travel.

The GAO’s Whitewash on the Social Cost of Carbon

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released its report on the Obama Administration Working Group’s development of “social cost of carbon” estimates. As we at IER have explained in extensive detail—in our formal comment submitted to Office of Management and Budget (OMB), at our conference last summer, and in testimony before the Senate—there are serious problems with the procedure by which the Administration derived these estimates. Yet the GAO report conveniently ignores all of these problems, at times actively misleading the innocent reader.

Voters should be very concerned when wealthy elitists like Bloomberg believe that their civil rights are for sale

BELLEVUE, WA – Today’s revelation that Michael Bloomberg’s “Everytown for Gun Safety” lobbying organization has donated another million dollars to the already-swollen Initiative 594 campaign war chest confirms that a “handful of billionaires” are intent on buying the November election, and along with it, the privacy rights of Washington State citizens, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said.

Nail Polish and Date Rape

The Hindustan Times reports a new use for women’s nail polish: as an indicator for the chemical rohypnol, commonly known as the “date rape drug.” The idea, said to be an invention of four students at North Carolina State University, is still in the development stage.

Sarah Palin predicted a weak Obama would enable the 'invasion' of Ukraine

At yesterday's tan suit presser, President Obama said a whole lot of nothing. After informing our ISIS enemies that he has no idea what he's going to do about them - if anything - he turned his attention to Russia. It's should be obvious to every clear-thinking man, woman, and child that, if over a thousand troops, tanks, and paratroopers drop into a foreign nation, it's being invaded. Unfortunately, it seems that it's not obvious to Barack Obama. ...Because the word "invasion" has magically disappeared from his vocabulary.

Russia now marching full-bore into Ukraine

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is full-speed ahead these days, as Vladimir Putin seeks to establish a "land bridge" between Russia and the Crimean Peninsula that will eliminate the need to supply Russians in Crimea by air. But don't worry! The New York Times reassures us that Barack Obama is downplaying the whole thing and is on top of the crucial task of managing our expectations that he will do a damn thing about it.
