Happy Days Are Here Again

So long sad times Go long bad times We are rid of you at last Howdy gay times Cloudy gray times You are now a thing of the past Happy days are here again The skies above are clear again So let's sing a song of cheer again Happy days are here again

Australians Repeal Carbon Tax and CASE for Carbon Tax

The Australian government has voted to repeal its carbon tax, becoming the first major power to do so. For those (like us at IER) who believe carbon taxes harm consumers in exchange for no corresponding environmental benefits, the move signals benefit for the Australian people. Yet the episode also carries lessons for the U.S. debate: By showing the fragility of foreign participation in a carbon scheme, the Australians have also repealed the intellectual case for an American carbon tax.

Bergdahl trade

The only thing about the Bergdahl trade and the latest news about his return to active service is that the only way to justify the trade of 5 terrorists for one deserter is to say he wasn't a deserter and put him back into service. Nothing else makes sense.

Loss of Sovereignty Disguised as Compassion

A Kauai man was sentenced to one year probation and a $200 fine on May 29, 2014 for letting his 8-year-old son walk one mile home as punishment for getting in trouble at school. I wondered what the progressive courts would do to American parents who would allow their minor children to trek unaccompanied across Mexico, hanging on trains, on buses, walking with a coyote, in order to arrive in a more prosperous country where welfare and economic security would await them through the generosity of a president who decided to nullify the southern border?

How "Normal" is Bowe Bergdahl?

There are few military crimes worse than desertion to the enemy short of outright treason by giving them aid and comfort.

Israel-Hamas: Conditions for a Stable Ceasefire

Assuming that Hamas will ultimately accept the Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire, even if with minor adjustments and guaranteed by an external party, the question arises whether conditions for a ceasefire and new understandings are indeed sufficiently ripe. The end mechanisms of the current conflict and the ultimate arrangement are meant to promote the strategic goals of both sides. Israel chose to mark Hamas as the responsible party in the Gaza Strip, while conducting a sustained effort to weaken it but without eliminating its rule. For its part, Hamas’ goal was to reposition itself as a powerful actor capable of controlling the Gaza Strip, and to enhance its stature in Egyptian and Israeli eyes.

Eric Holder Investigates Excrementous Crimes Against the Monarch

Just when you thought it was safe to tow an outhouse float in a small town Nebraska parade which poked fun of President Obama by labeling it the PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY [sic] you find yourself the object of a federal investigation by Attorney General Eric Holder who, like his boss, has no apparent sense of humor.
