‘Save the Environment--from the EPA’

Government Truth Commissions Make Politics Dirtier

In 2010, the website PolitiFact called Republican claims that ObamaCare is a "government takeover" of healthcare the "Lie of the Year." Last year, PolitiFact gave the title to President Obama's claim that under ObamaCare "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it." Obviously, PolitiFact's authority over what constitutes a "lie" is questionable given the contradiction between these two awards, and the website is subject to the same scrutiny we give everyone who speaks out about politics. But what if government gets to decide what constitutes "false" speech in politics and punish the "liars"?

Uncle Ion and Grandma’s Orchard

Last fall I was on a mission to see my Dad’s last three surviving siblings, two sisters and a brother. I wanted to visit uncle Ion, my Dad’s youngest brother, first. Had my Dad lived to a ripe old age, he would have probably looked very much like his sibling. When they were kids, Dad helped raise Ion and was his role model, especially after Grandma Elisabeta became a widow with eight kids at such a young age. Ion turned 78 in 2013 and lived in Grandma Elisabeta’s house in Popesti, not far from the bustling city of Ploiesti, the center of the oil industry during the communist regime.

It's Hard Being a Black Conservative

“We’re not being governed. We’re being ruled by incompetence.” It is refreshing to read a book that reflects one’s own views and “Guardian of the Republic” by Allen West, a former Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army for over twenty years and a former, one-term congressman from Florida, who is perhaps best known these days as a Fox News channel contributor. He is a very conservative, articulate black American.

UAW suddenly abandons quest for Chattanooga do-over

What the United Auto Workers learned from the devastation it helped to wreak on the hapless Detroit automakers was - well, not much, really. Rather than realize their combination of outlandish demands, political pressure and individual intimidation had created cost structures that no company could sustain, the union decided it could only survive by heading south and attempting to wreak the same devastation on transplants operating auto plants in the south.

MSNBC campaign advice to Dems: Embrace ObamaCare & tell people who lose their plans to 'deal with that!'

MSNBC is great.  In fact, it may be the greatest left-wing media outlet in history. No, it's not because they air quality programming - which they most certainly do not - and it's not because they make coherent, cogent, arguments -which, again, they do not. It's because, for whatever reason, they've taken the governors off their left-wing engines. The network's tolerance for nuttery is near limitless and it's very tough to get fired.  As a result, their hosts feel free to voice all of the beliefs that every liberal politician secretly holds dear, but can't say for fear of losing their jobs.

The Richer We Get, The Greener We’ll Become

It is very frustrating that after 25 years of the anti-pessimists being proven entirely right, and the doomsayers being proven entirely wrong, their credibility and influence waxes ever greater. That’s the bad news. The good news is that there is every scientific reason to be joyful about the trends in the condition of the Earth, and hopeful for humanity’s future, even if we are falsely told the outlook is grim. So Happy Earth Day. –-Julian Simon, 1 May 1995

Russian Dominance in Europe?

Russia's ability to exert its will in Crimea and threaten eastern Ukraine did not arise accidentally, but by design. Russia's successful use of threats, infiltration by special operations units, and outright invasion would have been impossible without the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, which enabled Moscow to be the beneficiary of subsequent large scale financing and technical assistance from the West.
