I double dare you

Listening to the head "trained seal" of the Police Chiefs spew figures again that they say are "facts" reminds me of an old saying my Daddy used to say. "Figures don't lie but liars figure".

A visitor from the past

Mr. Prime Minister, Sir, While I am reasonably certain you never get to see these messages of concern, fear and sometimes anger, perhaps those that provide you your daily in-put will footnote some briefings with this timeless and urgent wisdom that comes from the past – and that no member of the Left and totalitarian present have even dreamed.

NEWTOWN, Conn (Ammoland.com) All Gun Owners, Hunters and Shooters: With the fall hunting season fast approaching, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Lisa Jackson, who was responsible for banning bear hunting in New Jersey, is now considering a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) – a leading anti-hunting organization – to ban all traditional ammunition under the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976, a law in which Congress expressly exempted ammunition.

Evaluating China’s Military Strength

By Michael Mazza The Department of Defense recently released its long-overdue annual report on China’s military power. The document tells us much about how the Democratic Congress and the Obama administration would like to approach relations with China, and not nearly enough about China’s military modernization. It suggests we have a Congress that does not take the China challenge seriously and a White House that is uncertain how to tackle it.

Legal doesn’t equal ‘right’

It's hard to understand the Muslim insistence on building a mosque near the 9/11 site. Barack Obama is correct in saying they have the legal and constitutional right to build their mosque, but just because they have the right, doesn't mean they should.

Inside the Knockoff-Tennis-Shoe Factory

By NICHOLAS SCHMIDLE A shopkeeper in Italy placed an order with a Chinese sneaker factory in Putian for 3,000 pairs of white Nike Tiempo indoor soccer shoes. It was early February, and the shopkeeper wanted the Tiempos pronto. Neither he nor Lin, the factory manager, were authorized to make Nikes. They would have no blueprints or instructions to follow. But Lin didn’t mind. He was used to working from scratch. A week later, Lin, who asked that I only use his first name, received a pair of authentic Tiempos, took them apart, studied their stitching and molding, drew up his own design and oversaw the production of 3,000 Nike clones. A month later, he shipped the shoes to Italy. “He’ll order more when there’s none left,” Lin told me recently, with confidence.

WHO urges countries to take measures to combat antimicrobial resistance

Geneva -- Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) - the ability of micro-organisms to find ways to evade the action of the drugs used to cure the infections they cause - is increasingly recognised as a global public health issue which could hamper the control of many infectious diseases. Some bacteria have developed mechanisms which render them resistant to many of the antibiotics normally used for their treatment (multi-drug resistant bacteria), so pose particular difficulties, as there may be few or no alternative options for therapy.

A hot-button issue

With all levels of government across the U.S. undergoing draconian downsizing (1) and over 40 million citizens surviving on food stamps (2), and with normally sober Wall Street Journal scribes like Peggy Noonan (3) and Paul Craig Roberts (4) sounding like Old Testament prophets of doom, it's no doubt very handy for the Powers That Be to have a hot-button issue like the Ground Zero mosque controversy to serve as a lightning rod through America's summer of discontent. Far less was made of the fact that human remains of victims of the 9/11 terrorist strike were callously swept up with the debris in its aftermath and summarily disposed of -- or that the phantom menace of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction served as a pretext for war.
