The Case for a Carbon Tax is Much Weaker Than You Think

The "carbon fee"--not a tax mind you--legislation introduced by Senators Whitehouse and Schatz epitomizes the dual reality in the debates over climate change policy. The commentary on the bill would lead the innocent reader to believe that this is textbook economics in response to a "market failure." In reality, using the very same textbook economics and taking all of the Obama Administration computer models at face value, I will show that the proposed carbon tax is not at all suitable to the alleged problem. To repeat, the proposed U.S. carbon tax is unjustified on its own terms; one doesn't have to be a "denier" and question the underlying assumptions about physical climate change.

The Kindergarten Booties

The photograph of a pair of kids’ booties posted on a social website, “Copilaria anilor 80-90,” triggered a flood of memories – it was the exact pair that I used to wear as a child. They were the only ones available for purchase, and required uniform for all children who attended pre-school and kindergarten. I re-posted the photo thinking that a few of my Romanian friends would comment, but I was wrong. Instead, my much younger cousin from Romania remarked that she had a pair in pre-school in the 1980s. Who knew that commies would stick to the same sorry, cheap, and ugly pair of booties for decades?

Newfoundland’s $ 10 Billion Bailout for Government Employee Pensions

The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador recently announced that its pension crisis is solved, and that it’s on the path to good health. Fair Pensions for All and Mises Canada decided to investigate and were alarmed at what they found. Although some of the pension tension has been relieved, actions taken provide only very minor relief. The additional bailout announced of $2.62 billion does absolutely nothing to prevent further shortfall from happening again, and does not protect tax payers and future public sector workers.

Christmas Trees & Other Seasonal Decor

Anything and everything is promoted in the U.S. of A. There’s Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian by way of proof. So it should come as no surprise that some enterprising entrepreneurs have decreed December to be National Pear Month and even National Fruit Cake Month. While you and I might reach for a slice of the latter on Christmas Day somebody in the land of milk and hamburgers decided it would be National Pumpkin Pie Day.

Travel feature: Jersey

“Little bits of France dropped into the sea and picked up by Britain.” That is how Victor Hugo, the French poet, referred to the Channel Islands. We discover this at Jersey’s Living Legend Village where a fascinating video featuring Tony Robinson, John Nettles (who played Bergerac, Jersey’s famous detective) and other celebrities provides an insight into Jersey’s past. From smuggling through to German occupation, this is a land rich in history.

Why did Hagel have to go?

President Obama professed today strong appreciation for the service of his third Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel. But if he was so appreciative, why exactly is Secretary Hagel about to be former Secretary Hagel?
