How to age successfully with diabetes

By 2050, one quarter of the people in the world will be over 60 years old. Unfortunately, as baby-boomers age they are more susceptible to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, which is on the rise worldwide.

The Sun Also Rises

"Whilst the last members were signing [the Constitution], Doctor Franklin, looking towards the Presidents chair, at the back of which a rising sun happened to be painted, observed to a few members near him, that painters had found it difficult to distinguish in their art, a rising, from a setting, sun. I have, said he, often and often, in the course of the session, and the vicissitudes of my hopes and fears as to its issue, looked at that behind the President, without being able to tell whether it was rising or setting; but now at length, I have the happiness to know, that it is a rising, and not a setting sun. Franklin, Benjamin" (Source: BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, debates in the Constitutional Convention, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 17, 1787.James Madison, Journal of the Federal Convention, ed. E. H. Scott, p. 763) My buddy Bill sent me a photo proving indistinguishable from a setting or rising sun and the above quote sprang to mind. I thank you Bill for doing so as sunrise was becoming evident here in Louisiana. Bill lives in Florida as I once did. So, in this sense he gets the fresh breath of God’s light a wee bit sooner than I.

White bread helps boost some of the gut’s ‘good’ microbes

White-bread lovers take heart. Scientists are now reporting that this much-maligned food seems to encourage the growth of some of our most helpful inhabitants — beneficial gut bacteria. In addition to this surprising find, their study in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry also revealed that when looking at effects of food on our “microbiomes,” considering the whole diet, not just individual ingredients, is critical.

The Gardens of the Castle of Mey

Only a real estate agent would proclaim a half-dozen rooftop spaces atop a London apartment building to be ‘garden terraces.’ They total 2,000 square feet, along with a 9,000-square-foot interior, six-bedroom penthouse at Wellington Court in snazzy Knightsbridge. The rent will set you back no less than £50,000-a-week. This, notes The Mail on Sunday, breaks down to £7,142 per day or £297 per hour.

Rooting for Horseradish

Horseradish was acclaimed as an aphrodisiac by the ancient Greeks claims one source. The same source advices that its use is 3,000 years old and was known to the Egyptians as far back as 1,500 B.C. Since neither civilization survived this is hardly reassuring.

Cuba: 20th Anniversary of the Tugboat Massacre

Summit, New Jersey. Among the most flagrant atrocities committed by the Castro regime in its long history of human rights’ abuses, two incidents stand out that took place in the month of July —the Canimar River Massacre of 1980 and the Tugboat Massacre of 1994. Perpetrated by the Cuban regime still in power, they illustrate its profound disregard for human life and fundamental freedoms. On this anniversary, we remember the victims —their tragic loss is compounded by the continued impunity the Cuban dictatorship enjoys for these and many other crimes against humanity.
