Room at the Inn the Human Heart

There was No Room at the Inn more than 2,000 years ago on the Holy Night when Christ was born, and increasingly No Room at the Inn in secular 2016. Christmas crèches; the plaintive voices of little children scrubbed to be Christmas Pageant angels by their mothers, singing ‘Silent Night’ are silenced through mean-spirited litigation in a society that seems to thrive on taking offence at everything, but mostly the good.
There was No Room at the Inn for the Holy Family back in the days of King Herod, but Mary signalled her approval to a worried Joseph. They accepted a shelter shared by animals with no complaint because Mary and Joseph had an abundance of something so many of us don’t have today, a kind of humility that’s breath-taking in scope. Over the passing of time, No Room at the Inn has mushroomed into being no room for Christianity, no room for believers, the result of the wicked among us determined to have their way. In 2016 arguments over whether the Star of Bethlehem was really an “alignment of planets” are underway. Hardly any one looks up at the night sky any more, even though that’s where each day of our lives is written. In 2016, Christ’s burial place was exposed by archeologists for the first time in centuries. Just yesterday a virtual tour of His birthplace went up on line, courtesy of immersive film director and producer, Pearry Teo.

Meanwhile, revising history, clumsy attempts at rewriting the narrative and Fake News composed by governments bearing false witness against a foreign country, are the order of the day. They would—if only they could—put an abrupt end to the true story of Christ being laid in a manger by the most loving of all mothers. Even throughout the heaping on of deceit upon their very souls, millions will do just as the iconic song ‘O Holy Night’ advises for Christmas Eve: “Fall on your knees, Oh hear the Angels’ voices”. “Fake News” is still out there trying to take us into the darkest corners during all Christmas seasons, including this one. White House chief of staff Denis McDonough says “President Obama is “the most Catholic president in U.S. history”. (Washington FreeBeacon, Dec. 15, 2016). That’s what McDonough, a Catholic, told David Axelrod on his podcast “The Axe Files” on Wednesday during a conversation on faith and politics.
“Axelrod, who formerly served as Obama’s senior adviser in the White House, told McDonough that the president often talked about being raised in a spiritual tradition versus a religious tradition and that he later adopted his faith when he was older living in Chicago. “Look, I say to him, Axe, and I think I’ve said this to him in your presence and I’ve said this publicly before, I think this is our most Catholic of presidents,” McDonough said. “And I mean that by capital ‘C’ Catholic in what I see and what he does everyday.”

Would this be the same Catholic Obama who ordered religious symbols covered when he delivered a speech on the economy at Georgetown University? The outrageous deceits getting by as truth in the Fake News of the day would be enough to plunge souls into despair were it not for the realization that the devil’s always in the details. There are some sacred truths that “fake news” cannot possibly change and the Birth of Our Lord remains foremost among them. This is how the news never written should follow by natural order: Obama is on his way to Hawaii today, but God Almighty is still in His Heaven. There will forever be Room at the Inn for Christ because the Inn has always been the one in the human heart. Make your heart the Inn waiting to take in the Christ Child this Christmas and for every one coming your way thereafter.
