Voices outside my living room window tonight inspired the following addition to ongoing observation:
I'm not from here, and am a safety advocate, so the whole "strangers sitting in my front stairs" thing, especially at night, is concerning despite living in New Orleans since 2009.
Any odd sounds or voices near my home will be inspected, often with me easing the front door open and surprising person(s) on the stairs.
Inspection of the exterior has found trash on stairs, locked outlet cut open on the side for use without permission, signs of tampering with an outside water heater and repeated forced removal of covering on rear fence that a serial trespasser once kicked an opening into.
Most strangers were innocently chilling out on the front stairs.Others needed reminding someone was watching, and quickly moved on.
Given the level of vandalism, theft, burglary, robbery and forcible home invasions here, this is one custom that needs retirement to a place of honor commemorating days of old.
Uninvited strangers sitting on front stairs in this era raises red flags which may have not needed raising in the past but are waving now!
